Combatting Mould in Your Property

Whether you are a homeowner or a tenant, mould can often be a massive issue in the UK due to the damp and cold conditions at this time of year. The unpleasant fungi can be a cause for many health concerns, whether it be a sore throat, a blocked nose, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes or a skin rash. For children, or individuals with asthma/other lung diseases and people with mould allergies, it is not uncommon for them to experience more severe reactions to a mould infestation.

However, it isn’t all doom and gloom, as there are plenty of way where you can help prevent mould, and if it has already started to fester, there are also many ways in which to tackle it.

To help prevent mould in the first place, it is important to regularly ventilate your property and keep it adequately heated. Ensure that you are avoiding drying your clothes inside. If you have no choice but to dry your clothes inside, maybe due to the fact you don’t have a tumble dryer or outdoor space, make sure you are keeping the room properly ventilated by leaving a window open. Furthermore, whilst you are cooking it is important to use the cooker hood as that extracts a large amount of moisture that maybe be getting realised into the air. Another easy way to target mould, is to purchase a dehumidifier which will again, collect the moisture in the air before it is able to turn into condensation.

If mould has already started to make an appearance despite continuous preventative efforts, you can spray or wipe down the affected area with a fungicidal wash that carries a Health and Safety (HSE) 'approval number' and ensure that you follow the instructions for safe use. You should be able to wipe away any infested areas that aren’t too extreme.

By following the advice above, you should invariably be able to treat smaller patches of mould yourself, however if you find mould growing quickly in other areas of your home, or the infected patch becomes too large for you to handle, that is where you should call in professionals.
