New Tree Carving Commission in Leavesden Country Park

News at Harry Charles | 07/11/2023

A carving, done by local artist Will marks over a century of sports and fairground entertainment at Leavesden Country Park.

The sculpture, that was carved in August into a Horse Chestnut tree that had sadly been felled back last year and been left ever since. The local chainsaw artist Will was commissioned by the Three Rivers District Council to make a spectacle of the felled tree for the award winning National Lottery Heritage-funded contest, and in doing so he carved sculptures that represent 100 years of sports, which was shown with the sculpture of a football game and cricket game commencing, and with a detailed carousel, which pays tribute to all the fairground activities that were held at the park over the century for the patients and staff of Leavesden Asylum/Hospital from 1870 – 1995, and then in later years, by the community.

The sculpture has also joined nine others at the country park, which all mark the parks history, with carvings of Leavesden Aerodrome and Leavesden studios (now Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden).

The carving can be enjoyed by all and lies in the field nearby the Leaves HIVE building.
